About Club SC Sonning Common Youth Club

In August 2011, Oxfordshire County Council needed to cut their budget dramatically and only kept 7 Hub youth centres in the most densely populated parts of Oxfordshire.

The Management Committee decided to fight to keep a youth club in Sonning Common, it could not close after being there for more than 35 years. Indeed, the Chairman of the Management committee had attended the youth club when she was at Chiltern Edge School.

The comittee decided to try to form the club into a Community Youth Club. They bid for some start up funds from OCC and the parish council kindly sponsored us for up to £10,000.  This meant they would pay OCC  this much if we didn't manage to raise enough money. We could then keep the club running for at least three years, which we needed to prove we could do to get the start up grant. Carol Viney spoke at a Cabinet Meeting at County Hall to convince them many young people in Sonning Common, Kidmore End, Peppard and surrounding villages really needed this youth club. We got our start up fund.

We had many discussions with the Headteacher of Chiltern Edge, as we wished to keep the youth club premises with the school and it now belongs to them.

There was a great deal of goodwill in the village to see the youth club succeed.

The first thing we did was choose a new name.....Club SC. Then we chose a new youth leader. We changed the membership age to 10 to 16 and invited year 6 children from local primary schools to the Wednesday sessions. This resulted in many more Members signing up to join.

We set up a new Constitution and we also had to comply with lots of Health and Safety Legislation. We also had to set up a lot of safeguarding policies and ensure all staff were CRB checked and that we had first aiders.

Many local  people have raised funds or donated money. Nottakwire, a group of older local people who put on concerts in the village hall have given us several donations. Daisy 's coffee shop at the Herb Farm donated a computer for the youth leader. Goring Lions donated. John Davey, a local carpenter, has donated a great deal of his time to refitting the kitchen and fitting out the new Activity Room. The WI have also donated to us several times.

We then appointed our next Youth Leader, Becky in August 2012 who proved an inspirational leader. Sunny and Ruth took over in the summer of 2017 and are doing a fantastic job at the club, it os a really fun place to be. We also have some excellent volunteers helping to keep the club vibrant.

Club SC has now been open as a Community Youth Club for six years. It is going from strength to strength and we are so pleased you all enjoy it. Any suggestions you have to make it more enjoyable and worthwhile will be greatly appreciated.
